We are excited to host the 12 ISS in Basel, a vibrant metropolis at the heart of Central Europe. Consistently ranked for its high quality of life, Basel is a unique destination for art and culture enthusiasts. It offers a rich tapestry of walkable opportunities for exploration and inspiration; from the medieval lanes of the Old Town to modern architectural icons, we invite you to experience the confluence of architecture, history, design, and craft, creating an inspiring setting that embodies the spirit of our conference.
The conference will take place at the Museum of Cultures (MBK) located in Basel’s old town. one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. Full of narrow alleyways, open squares and hidden gardens, the town’s history is reflected in its variety of buildings and architectural styles. MKB itself is composed of different structures spanning hundreds of years, the newest additions were completed in 2011, by Herzog & de Meuron.
Basel sits on the crossroads of Switzerland, France, and Germany, a region with a profound connection to textiles, dyeing, and printing. A booming silk ribbon industry was established in the 16th century by Italian and French immigrants, turning the city into a textile hub. Mulhouse, the neighboring French town, is famed for its historic textile printing industry. 12 ISS guests will have the opportunity to explore this rich region following the symposium.
Basel’s unique position allows us to connect contemporary dimensional transformation to centuries of European artisanal and industrial innovation. This bustling and unique city provides a rich, multi-layered backdrop for a meaningful exchange of knowledge, practice, and traditions at the 12 ISS.
